OpenAI turns on customer-data sharing for existing ChatGPT ad pixels August 17

Two people work at a wooden bench in a small warehouse studio at night, stacked shipping boxes and a desk lamp behind them. A woman in the foreground taps a phone cabled to a large monitor while a man stands behind her with his arms folded, watching. The monitor shows a vertical flow of connected step cards with a checklist down one side; its own text is too small and indistinct to read. Four small blue-lit cubes sit in a row along the cable where it meets the screen.

What changed

OpenAI sent ChatGPT advertisers a product update this month, and the notice shows nine changes to its ad system. Eight hand advertisers new tools. The ninth sets a date.

On August 17, OpenAI turns on automatic advanced matching for ad pixels that already exist, a switch from the prior off-by-default setting, which means silence counts as agreeing.

Why it matters

The setting reads names, emails, and phone numbers typed into a business's own web forms, scrambles them, and sends them to OpenAI to match sales back to ads. PPC Land says legal responsibility for having permission to send that data stays with the advertiser, not with OpenAI.

If you run ads for your own business, a setting you never turned on starts sending customer contact details from August 17, which means doing nothing counts as agreeing. The fix costs minutes: Tools, then Conversions, then Data Source, then Edit pixel. Taken together, the design suggests the burden moved to the busiest people in the system: small advertisers who do not read product updates.

What to watch

If OpenAI extends the deadline or sends a clearer reminder as it launches in Brazil and Mexico, the pressure would ease; until then, the toggle is the whole game.

Whether small advertisers actually find the setting before August 17, a week from the notice, is not yet known, which means the checklist above earns its space.
